CLIENT/COMPETITION
THE 11 SECOND CLUB

-
In given the choice to choose between doing a project for a client or entering a competition, I decided to go down the competition route. The 11 Second Club have monthly competitions that allow beginners, upcoming animators or experienced animators to take part in these competitions to showcase their skills. The 11 second team provide animators with a chosen audio to animate to.
-
The May competition audio was from a show called 'Superstore'. Within the audio I could hear that there was two characters present having an awkward conversation with each other. The 11 second club made it easy for those entering the competition by putting the transcript for the audio which made videoing the reference video simpler than it needed to be later in the process.

PLANNING

-
I started my planning process immediately after listening to the audio. I divided my competition entrance into 3 potential ideas. The first idea I had created was a normal conversation between two characters. In the scene the first character would carry out their lines then the camera will eventually cut to the second character to get their reaction when responding to what the first character had said. The second Idea was to have the second character off screen and position the camera from more of the second character eyes, i.e their POV, when having a conversation with the first character. The Last idea was a 'FaceTime call' idea. In this Idea I envisioned having one character present in the scene whilst sitting at their desk when being on the call with their friend. I thought it'd be a better approach to also have the second character off screen to capture the performance and comedic gag I was trying to go for. The two rigs I had in mind to use was the 'Dana Rig' or 'The Eleven Rig'.

I shot reference for both characters to get a feel of what emotions I wanted to portray. Although I didn't include a second character in my final animation, I decided it was best to have a reference video for the second character just in case I changed I needed to tweak my idea to accommodate to having two characters in the scene. Through utilising a camera cuts I initially had an idea to have the camera flip between the two characters whilst they were on the FaceTime call to each other.
THE FINAL ANIMATION
-
In my final animation I decided to use the Dana Rig as my character because of how expressive the rig can be. My last idea was the final decision for what I wanted to do for my entry, I loved the idea of doing the FaceTime call because I feel like it was easier to add the comedic attribute for the audio. I also loved that I was able to put myself into the situation of both characters after experiencing an awkward moment during a conversation. I do believe I could improve a lot on this animation and would like to look into polishing this animation a lot more in the future. As this was my first ever animation competition, I can agree on the fact that I enjoyed this experience more than I thought I would. It was very organised and straightforward in knowing how to upload my animation and what to include when entering.
